New York City, New York (New York Injury News) — A 12-year old New York boy was playing basketball and was severely injured on Tuesday when he was hit by debris that was kicked up due to the firing of stray bullets in the street. The boy was playing at the Spanish Harlem community center when the accident occurred as reported by local police.
The victim, Justin Rapp, said that he heard approximately three shots and felt a surge of pain when he was hit on his left arm. He reported that he didn’t waste any time and just started running. When he came to a halt, he felt the pain and later fell down on the pavement.
Rapp’s friends carried him and immediately called the ambulance for assistance. The bullets were fired in close proximity of the E 108 St. on the Madison Ave. His grandmother, who is a resident of the same locality on the ninth floor, went to safeguard her grandson while waiting for the emergency department.
Helen Merritt, 62, later reported that she could no believe how she managed to go down the nine floors and rush to the scene so quickly. But she says that when the case concerns your own babies, you do not need much strength to reach to them and you just try to meet them as soon as possible.
Justin’s grandmother rode with him to the Mount Sinai Medical Center and the rest of the family accompanied them within a short while. Even though Justin was patched up quickly, the restlessness caused by the accident is still felt by the family. According to Helen, if the accident would have affected even an inch to the left side, he would have died because it would have then hit his heart.
The attack also shocked his mother and she commented that they though that the after school activity will provide safety to the children but the crazy kids do not have any respect for the lives of others.
