Long Island, New York (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — On March 17, 2004, a patient of Long Island College Hospital was admitted for treatment of blood clots found in the deep veins of her legs. Although she was briefly started on blood thinning medication, the treatment was stopped before it had shown that the clots in the legs were breaking up. As a result, the patient died because the clot traveled to her lung.
The Hospital claimed that they had stopped the blood thinners because the patient was 8 weeks pregnant and that the pregnancy was a risk factor for the blood clots. The Hospital then performed an unnecessary elective termination of pregnancy.
The Hospital should have never stopped the medications and there was no urgency or need to perform the elective termination of pregnancy when they did.
