Manhattan, New York– Window washers scaffolding almost falls, dangles 70 stories in the air for 30 minutes until rescued. Long Island, New York
When Dan Sandler called his mother to wish her a happy birthday, she had no idea that he was about 700 feet in the air and dangling from an unsecured scaffold. Sandler, 32, of Massapequa, L.I., was doing his routine work – installing a pane of glass in a downtown New York building, when the brakes failed on the platform holding him and his coworker Tommy Florio, 42, of Queens. They work for Philip Kaplan Glass Works Company in Manhattan. The two men on the platform dropped to the floor below, and dangled high in the air for about 30 minutes until firefighters came to their rescue. The Buildings Department issued violations to Philip Kaplan for “failure to properly attach personal safety lines, failure to supervise rigging equipment and failure to have a daily maintenance log.” Manhattan Tower was cited for those violations in addition to “failure to provide documentation that the workers had been properly trained and failure to provide a designated foreman.” These are pending, but the important part is that, fortunately, the men were unharmed.
