Houston, TX(JusticeNewsFlash.com)–H.E. Butt Grocery company (H-E-B), a privately held supermarket chain, based in San Antonio, issued a meat recall in 68 Houston stores on Wednesday, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. H-E-B, who has over 310 grocery stores throughout Texas and Northern Mexico, recalled potentially contaminated briskets, skirt steaks, and ground meat products, after the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) http://usda.fsis.gov, a division of the Department of Agriculture (USDA) http://usda.gov, determined 380,000 pounds of processed beef my be infected with E. coli bacterium.
H-E-B company leaders announced the voluntary recall after learning 380,000 pounds of beef products, processed at the plant of one of their meat producers, JBS Swift Beef Company of Greeley, Colorado, was possibly contaminated with E. coli. The contaminated meat products were distributed to 14 different states and federal safety regulators have confirmed 18 consumer illnesses. FSIS regulators, in cooperation with JBS Swift Beef, designated the voluntary recall as a Class 1, which has the highest health risk according to the USDA. When innocent consumers are exposed and infected with E. coli bacterium they may experience serious illness and even death. Some of the symptoms of E. coli poisoning include bloody diarrhea and the infection can lead to dehydration, kidney failure, and death.
