California agency accuses EPA of failing to serve and protect arctic habitat.
San Francisco, CA (JusticeNewsFlash.com)—The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/ accused the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) http://www.epa.gov/ for failure to protect the Arctic region polar bears. CBD states, the EPA failed to consider the impact of toxic contamination, from pesticide use in the U.S., on the arctic habitat, which includes people and animals. The environmental agency sent a 60-day notice letter of the intent-to-sue to the EPA on Wednesday, July 8, 2009.
The EPA approved pesticides used in the United States are reportedly being transported to the Arctic region via numerous atmospheric, oceanic, and biotic pathways. These pesticides and related toxic contaminates are shown to be linked to suppressed immune function, endocrine disruption, shrinkage of reproductive organs, hermaphroditism, and a higher rate of cub mortality in polar bears. The CBD also stated the human Arctic dwellers, who rely on northern region food substances, face an increased risk to the exposure to these toxic contaminates through their food sources.
In accordance to state and federal regulations, all pesticides used in the United States must be registered with the EPA before they can be lawfully used and administered. The EPA must examine the effect and impact any pesticides may have on animals protected under the Endangered Species Act. The polar bear was officially protected under the Endangered Species Act on May 15, 2008, but the EPA reportedly has not determined the impact of any EPA approved pesticides on the endangered species.
According to Wikipedia http://www.wikipedia.org/ The Center of Biological Diversity is a non-profit membership organization based in Tucson, Arizona. The CBD has 220,000 members who fight and advocate for the protection of endangered species, and wild places through legal action and scientific petitions.
