FHP continues to investigate semi-truck wreck that killed 76 year-old female.
Jacksonville, FL–A three-vehicle automobile accident killed one driver and injured another two on Friday morning. WJXT Jacksonville reports the motor vehicle collision (MVC) took place on U.S. Highway 301 in Callahan, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) state troopers state the crash occurred when a Toyota, driven by 21 year-old Michael Mitchell, rear-ended a 2005 Buick. The Buick, driven by 76 year-old Maxine Jones, was preparing to make a left turn into her driveway when it was pushed forward into the path of a big rig truck. Callahan police officials say the tractor-trailer truck, operated by 52 year-old Daniel Hinson Jr., struck Jones’ vehicle. The impact of the collision forced the Buick off of the roadway. Jones’ vehicle came to a rest in the woods. The Buick was crushed. All lanes of the Nassau County roadway were shut down from approximately 9:45 a.m. to almost 1:00 p.m. while police detectives investigated the truck wreck.
Jones, who was wearing a safety belt at the time of the car crash, was pronounced dead by Callahan area emergency medical services (EMS) team. Police leaders say because the force of the MVC was so intense, it would have killed any person, regardless of whether the person was wearing a safety belt. Mitchell, the driver of the vehicle that struck the Buick, suffered minor injuries. The 18-wheeler truck driver, Hinson, was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center by Nassau County area paramedics. The extent of his injuries is unknown. Police authorities indicate that charges against Mitchell are still pending.
