Long Beach, CA—A pedestrian was hit and killed by an out-of-control FedEx truck on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. After hitting the pedestrian, the FedEx truck then slammed into a long line of parked cars along a crowded Long Island street, as reported by Newsday.com.
According to Long Beach Police the FedEx truck driver, Alvin Jackson, 25, of the Bronx, was possibly speeding westbound on East Park Avenue when the truck lost control and struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was identified as John Winter, 51, of Point Lookout. The out-of-control truck then slammed into a Toyota Solara convertible while its driver, Bonni Goetz, was sitting inside of the vehicle. The FedEx truck struck the car with such force it caused the car to ram into two other vehicles parked in front of her. Goetz was transported by area emergency medical service (EMS) crews to the South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside for treatment of her non-life threatening injuries she sustained in the collision. Goetz was treated by attending medical professionals and was released. Emergency response crews pronounced Winter dead at the scene of the accident. Accident investigators are still investigating the accident, and believe drugs and alcohol were not a factor. The driver of the FedEx truck has been charged at this time.
