Suffolk County, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — A small aircraft flying over the Long Island area had to make an emergency crash landing due to suspected mechanical malfunctions, as reported by the Suffolk News-Herald. The small airplane crashed in Suffolk Deer Forest Road on Monday afternoon when it was taken out for a relaxing day of sightseeing, according to Officials. The plane is being sheltered at local Suffolk airport.
The pilot of the one-engine small airplane was North Carolina resident, 68-year-old James Beauchamp. Beauchamp stated that he became aware of the mechanical difficulties when he was flying over the area with his 2 other passengers, stated police.
The passenger of the aircraft remained unharmed in this crash landing. Pilot Beauchamp suffered minor head, arm and back injuries due to his attempt to turn the crashed aircraft towards the country road but a wing became trapped on a tree branch, which sent the plane spinning through to the end of the forest.
Locals reported seeing the airplane looking for a place to land. A witness stated that the aircrafts one engine Mooney M20F had stopped working in mid-flight over Long Island’s Suffolk County. The aircraft was later towed via wrecker off of the local road.
Officials in Virginia and the Federal Aviation Administration are working together to investigate the Suffolk plane crash.
