Florida personal injury lawyer’s alert-Miami man filed a lawsuit against Publix supermarkets for shoplifting allegations and a strip search.
Miami, FL—A Miami man filed a lawsuit against Publix supermarkets on Wednesday, August 12, 2009. The lawsuit states the man was wrongfully accused of shoplifting and was asked to take off his clothes for a strip search by store managers, as reported by CBS 4.
The plaintiff, Nathaniel Cruz, went to the Publix at 5715 NW 7th Street on January 26, 2009, for tuna fish and crackers and picked up a bottle of eye drops. Cruz realized he didn’t have enough money for the eye drops and left them on another aisle. Cruz was then approached by a Publix employee and a store manger, who accused him of shoplifting in front of other customers. The Publix manager and employee then took Cruz to the manager’s office and the men’s room, where they asked him to remove his clothes. Cruz reportedly complied after Publix officials said they would call the police if he didn’t follow their orders. Another Publix manager then came and told Cruz to put his clothes back on, after they found the eye drops on another aisle. The managers apologized to Cruz and said it was a misunderstanding. Cruz’s father arrived at the Publix and told the managers this would not be the end of this embarrassing encounter.
