Chicago, IL—A construction worker tragically died when the Bobcat front-end loader he was operating fell seven stories and pinned him underneath it. The fatal construction accident happened on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2009 at 9:40 a.m., as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
A construction worker conducting work in a Bobcat at the Chicago Housing Authority demolition project, in the 2400 block of South State Street, reportedly fell seven stories. The man was trapped underneath the Bobcat, and appeared to be unresponsive when emergency crews arrived at the scene. Rescue crews reportedly had to use a crane to release the man from underneath the construction equipment. The critically injured man was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by emergency medical services (EMS) professionals for treatment of his life-threatening injuries. Medical professionals treating the injured construction worker pronounced him dead at 10:08 a.m. It is unknown how the Bobcat and the man fell seven stories at the demolition site, although some reports indicated the man lost control of the tractor when he started it up. Police officials are reportedly investigating the accident, but not as a criminal case. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ is expected to arrive at the scene of the fatal accident and conduct a full investigation.
