FAA alerts Georgia aviation accident lawyers- National Transportation Safety Board investigates single engine plane crash at Jackson County Airport.
Jefferson, GA—A Georgia couple was tragically killed in a single-engine plane crash after they attempted to land at the Jackson County Airport. The fatal plane crash happened on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at around 1:55 p.m., as reported by the Citizen-Times.
The single-engine Beechcraft Sierra BE24 carrying James Lovins, 58, and his wife Rhetta Lovins, 59, both from Vidalia, Georgia, took off from the Creve Coeur Airport in St. Louis at 9:20 a.m., and was scheduled to arrive at the Jackson County Airport at 1:45 p.m. According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) http://www.faa.gov/ officials, they believe the plane was trying to make a “go around, where you come in, land, and for whatever reason, you choose not to land or cant land, you pull up and go around and tray again.” This is where they believe the accident occurred in the “pull up phase”, while trying to land at the Jackson County Airport. Around 1:55, a witness called 911 to report a possible plane crash. The witness told officials he saw the aircraft travel down the 3,200-foot runway, and never came back. The witness jumped into his plane, searched the area, and spotted the wreckage in a ravine about a quarter of a mile from the end of the runway. Rescue crews reportedly were not able to immediately reach the victims, due to the unstable ravine and the victims were trapped in the wreckage. Rescue crews had to use heavy-duty equipment to cut trees and secure the plane so it wouldn’t slide down the slope. Investigators stated it is unknown who was piloting the plane at the time of the crash. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) http://www.ntsb.gov/ are conducting a full investigation into the fatal plane crash.
