Eyewitnesses called police after elderly man laid on pavement after sport utility vehicle hit and killed him in Jersey City, NJ.
Jersey City, NJ (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – An elderly native to Bergen-Lafayette division was hit and killed when he was crossing a neighborhood street by a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) Wednesday morning, announced the Jersey Journal.
The victim was identified as 86-year-old John Donavan who had been struck by the SUV at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Ocean Avenue at around 10:30 a.m.
A witness peaked out the window of the library across the street and saw Donavan lifeless on the pavement. The driver of the Ford Explorer that hit Donavan was heading northbound on Pacific Avenue when he became aware of the elderly man standing on the side of the street ready to cross.
The driver, identified as 51-year-old Isaiah Heyward, resident of Jersey City, claimed that Donavan hastily decided to venture into the street. Heyward stopped his SUV after the crash as eyewitnesses caught the attention of a police officer who reported the accident. Heyward said that he did not have adequate warning to swerve out of the way of the elderly pedestrian.
Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived to transport Donavan to Jersey City Medical Center where doctors declared him to be dead. Family sources commented that Donavan lived for his family.
