Raleigh, NC—A groom was tragically killed less than four hours before his wedding was set to take place. The groom was ejected from the car he was traveling in on his way to breakfast with one of his groomsmen. The fatal accident happened on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 7:30 a.m., as reported by The News & Observer.
According to police officials, the groom, Chris Raynor, 28, of Raleigh, was in the backseat of a car driven by one of his groomsmen at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Westgate Road. Another motorist, James Howard Early, of Asheville, ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into the vehicle Raynor was traveling in. Raynor, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car. A third vehicle then ran over Raynor, who was lying in the roadway. Raynor was rushed by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to WakeMed for treatment of his serious injuries. Attending medical professionals at WakeMed later pronounced Raynor dead. Early was cited for a red light violation, and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Raynor was scheduled to marry his fiancé, Karen Taylor, of Raleigh, at the Cathedral of the Scared Heart in downtown Raleigh that day. The couple reportedly met through a mutual friend and got engaged in November. The Raleigh couple was also scheduled to leave for a honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean on Monday.
