Brooklyn, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — Bed-Stuyvesant tenants have been living in their apartments without water for two months, announced New York Daily News.
Tenants that live off of Malcolm X Boulevard in the Bed-Stuy apartment buildings have survived with no water due to broken pipelines for two months. Tenants are seeking out water from fire hydrants and park water fountains to drink and bath their children.
A tenant named Connie Peters has been filling up bottles at a local fire hydrant for the last two months. The pipes have been left broken and the residents are struggling with no running water. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) www.epa.gov/ said that New York City must shut the water off because the broken pipeline could cause leaks and flooding in the streets. The City said that the water will be turned on after the landlord fixes the pipe.
Tenants reported that the apartment building has not been maintained since Carl Plata, the landlord past away last year leaving the apartments neglected. 46-year-old Estelle Taylor revealed that she had been using water from the fire hydrant and a park water fountain and heating it up on the stove for bathing purposes.
Former director of the Drum Institute for Public Policy and City Council running nominee Mark Winston Griffith is getting involved by holding a rally to protest at the apartment buildings on Monday.
Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/home.html listed Plata as the landlord, and they also committed to hiring a contractor to fix the pipeline.
