Montgomery, NJ (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A school bus was struck by a garbage truck Tuesday injuring both drivers, announced the New Brunswick Home News Tribune.
The accident took place on Burnt Hill Road directly in front of the Montgomery Middle School property. There were no children reported on the school bus at the time of the crash. Police officials identified the school bus driver as 70-year-old Robert McGurick, resident of Manville. The school bus had dropped off kindergartner’s and was en route back to the school bus region parking garage when it was struck by the garbage truck. The operator of the garbage truck was identified as 53-year-old Tony Thompson.
Police investigators reported the crash to have occurred when the garbage truck jumped the median and collided with the school bus head on around 1p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Police and emergency medical services (EMS) responded to the scene of the accident. Firefighters extricated Thompson, who was trapped in the damaged garbage truck driver’s seat. The garbage truck was privately owned by Blue Star Carting of Branchburg, New Jersey. An ambulance transported McGurick to Hillsborough Rescue Squad to Prince Medical Center for minor head trauma and arm injuries.
Thompson was taken via ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey for trauma to his leg and head, according to police. Burnt Hill Road was temporarily shut down for investigation and was reopened three hours later. Police had not issued any tickets, or summoned either driver to appear in court for the accident. Local fire departments and Somerset County HAZMAT crew were a part of the investigation team.
