Queens, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A New York City police investigator (NYPD) was killed in a car accident over the weekend when it collided with a sanitation truck, announced Newsday.
The police investigator was off-duty at the time of the crash and operating a normal vehicle. NYPD reported the accident took place on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. NYPD identified the New York investigator as 42-year-old detective Timothy Duffy. Duffy was an active investigator in the Brooklyn murder department.
A representative for the New York Police Department reaffirmed that the detective was in fact off-duty at the time of the crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. Saturday morning. The accident temporarily closed the eastbound traffic lanes on the Kosciusko Bridge.
The detective was operating a 2006 Toyota Camry when it rear ended the bumper of the privately-owned and operated sanitation truck. Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived to transport the critically injured officer to the Elmhurst Hospital Center, where doctors declared him to be dead an hour after the crash.
Police were unsure if the truck driver was injured in the crash. The Coroner office’s investigated the crash to determine the reason for the detective’s death.
