NYPD and the Coast Guard responded to the New York boating accident that injured 4 and killed 3.
Wantagh, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A boat crashed on an island near the Wantagh Parkway on Sunday after the captain attempted to navigate the boat through the channel in the dark, announced Newsday.
Four people are in critical condition while three other passengers were killed, when the boat crashed in the marshy land on the east side of the Bridge located on Island Creek. The Hustler brand vessel was speeding through the narrow channel when it hit the island. The force of the crash catapulted all of the seven passengers out of the power boat, reported the Nassau County police.
The Coast Guard, New York Police Department (NYPD) and other rescue officials reported to the scene to pick up the surviving victims of the boating accident. Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived to transport the injured. Two of the passengers were picked up via trauma helicopter to be taken immediately for medical treatment.
Officials determined that speed was more than likely a major factor in the crash. The boat had climbed up into the shore more than 100 feet away from the water. Wantagh Park authorities did report that there was not a defined speed limit posted for boaters. The captain of the boat was declared dead at the scene of the crash. Officials determined that he was in his late 60s.
A passenger in the crash was also declared dead by medical officials at the Nassau University Medical Center, located in East Meadow. A female passenger, transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to another nearby hospital, and was declared dead shortly after arriving.
Medical officials announced that the other surviving passengers— one female and two male— were in life threatening condition at the Nassau University Medical Center. The names of the victims have not been released as of yet. Police identified the owner of the boat to be Theresa Maniaci, of Copiague. Police were not certain if she was a passenger on board the boat at the time of the crash.
