Appleton, WI—A boiler explosion injured two workers who were conducting a routine boiler inspection at the Appleton Medical Center (AMC). The workplace accident happened on Friday afternoon, October 2, 2009 around 3:00 p.m., as reported by WBAY an ABC affiliate.
The Appleton Fire Department stated that a contractor was making a routine valve repair on the Medical Center’s 3-year-old boiler when a explosion occurred, which injured two workers– one of them being a AMC employee. The explosion reportedly occurred while the workers were making the repair. A boiler plate flung off the boiler and smacked one of the workers. The injured AMC employee was airlifted by emergency medical services (EMS) helicopter to ThedaCare Medical Center in Neenah for treatment of head and facial injuries. The AMC employee is reportedly listed in serious condition. The contractor was also injured, and was treated at the Appleton Medical Center and then released.
Officials reported that the explosion had not disrupted operations at the Wisconsin medical center. Officials with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are currently conducting a full investigation surrounding the explosion. The Appleton area police, fire department, and OSHA have since deemed the area where the explosion took place safe for operation.
