Newark, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A pedestrian woman was fatally injured when she was struck by an Amtrak Acela train Monday morning, October 5, 2009, announced the News Journal.
The 25-year-old woman, identified by police as Ines Fazlic, was tragically hit and killed by an Amtrak train Monday morning around 8:30 a.m. in Newark.
The young waitress was seen taking a shortcut across the train tracks that run along Elkton Road, just behind the Eagle Diner where Ines worked for four years as a server. Newark police and Media services flooded the Diner’s parking lot to investigate and report the apparent accident.
Investigators are puzzled as to why Ines did not see or hear the train approaching. Eye-witness customers at the diner reported seeing Ines walking and chatting on her cell phone while she reportedly walked to her friend’s house, when she was struck by the train.
Residents told media and police that it had been 14 years since someone was a victim to a train. Passersby and customers in the Diner were shocked when they heard what had happened to such a young talented woman. Employees at a nearby vocational school heard the train’s whistle blowing and one of the teachers ran out of the building to see what was going on.
He called 911 immediately. Pennsylvania police authorities shut down the train for nearly three hours. The train resumed its schedule at 11:30 a.m.
There have been few accidents that have involved the train tracks in years. Newark police reported that neglect of the train conductor or crew was not a contributing factor in this fatal accident.
