Sinking Spring, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A fire broke out after an electrical panel exploded at an asphalt plant in eastern Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 9, 2009, announced the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Officials said a plant explosion injured three workers at the facility. The Fire Marshall of Cumru Township investigated the explosion, and reported that the electrical panel was the source of the fire. The control panel located in the control room had burst into flames, according to officials. The plant explosion reportedly happened at the H&K Group’s South Reading Blacktop.
The explosion occurred around 11 .a.m., which injured a worker who was taking his lunch break in the control room. Two other employees were injured after attempting to help their fellow injured worker. The first injured worker was identified as James Cawthern, 62, who was an electrical contractor. The two workers who helped Cawthern, were identified as Carl Keefer, 49, and John Hanlon, 57.
Emergency medical services (EMS) transported Hanlon and Cawthern to Lehigh Valley Hospital to be treated for critical injuries. Keefer did not suffer from any serious injuries, but was taken to Reading Hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation. State police, in cooperation with the government agency Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/, are probing the situation.
