Legal news for Pennsylvania Construction Accident lawyers—A crane collapsed, which injured pedestrians and killed a construction worker on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A construction worker fell 125 feet to the ground when a crane fell over and injured several pedestrians on Monday afternoon, October 12, 2009 in Center City, announced KYW.
The crane toppled over around 1:30 p.m. on the corner of 21st Street and Walnut Street. The construction worker that plummeted to his death was a 40-year-old man, who had been maneuvering the crane lift when he fell out of the cherry-picker basket 125 feet up. The crane fell over and the man was pronounced dead shortly after the fall, as reported by the KYW news team.
The crane’s collapse prompted bricks and pieces of debris to cascade down onto bystanders, and vehicles on the street. A 70-year-old woman was injured at the scene by the falling debris and/or the crane as she driving her car past the intersection. She was treated at Hahnemann Hospital for a broken arm. Two other people at the scene sustained minor injuries when they were struck while walking out of a nearby store.
The crane landed right next to a car full of family members, who reportedly also suffered injuries in the wreck. The crane also crashed into a local florist store, damaged 13 units in an apartment building, and obstructed the intersection. Walnut Street was temporarily shut down for clean up. The Department of Licenses and Inspection were investigating to determine the cause of the incident.
Witnesses who saw the wreckage from inside their store windows remarked that it looked like 9/11 with the dust and debris raining down.
