New Orleans, LA—A 19-year-old construction worker may loose his right arm after he was pulled into a portable mortar mixer. The construction accident happened on Monday, October 12, 2009 around 2:45 p.m., near South Dorgenois and Erato Streets, as reported by WXVT.
According to the New Orleans Fire Department, Isaac Lee, 19, reportedly got caught in the portable mortar mixer by his arm, which pulled him into the machinery up to his waist. Lee’s right arm was apparently mangled; his cheek and the top if his head was impaled, and his facial lacerations were nearly a half-inch deep. Lee was reportedly conscious and alert when emergency medical services (EMS) crews arrived at the scene. Rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pry the injured man from the construction machinery. Lee was then rushed to a local hospital by EMS teams for treatment of his serious injuries. The condition of the worker is unknown.
The general contractor of the site, Boh Bros. Construction Co., stated the injured worker is employed by a subcontractor who is conducting work at the site. Officials with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) are expected to conduct a full investigation into the construction accident.
