Bennington, VT (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A pilot from New Jersey was flying his plane over Vermont when he suddenly crashed near an airport on Sunday evening, October 25, 2009, announced the Rutland Herald.
Bennington police and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) www.faa.gov searched for the downed aircraft after it was reportedly seen by hikers around 7 p.m. The pilot, identified as a West Milford, N.J. man in his mid-50s, was said to have left the Greenwood Lake Airport out of Milford, on Sunday. He was expected to land two hours after takeoff. Bennington police reported that the pilot was found in the wreckage of the demolished plane on Whipstock Mountain.
The pilot was identified as 58-year-old Chaim Weiss, who was flying a four-seat Cessna 172 when he crashed for unknown reasons. Police are investigating to determine if Weiss had a medical condition, or if the crash was poor judgment. It was very dark outside when the plane crashed. The pilot’s family had no idea why he was in Vermont.
Weiss was the only person in the plane at the time of the crash. There were no reported damages done to property. Police did not confirm if the flashing beacon was functional at the time of the plane crash.
FAA investigated the scene of the crash to gather evidence. The aircraft was registered with Sky Training LLC in West Milford, N.J. They were contacted by the FAA and a woman said to forward all questions to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) www.ntsb.gov.
Bennington Police investigated the pilot’s death. It was not suspected that the reason for the crash was a criminal act. This aviation crash is the first in 20 years for Bennington, Vermont. The investigation continues.
