A Mazda van transporting five foster kids, collided with a Toyota minivan on Dunkirk Street near Liberty Avenue around 5 p.m. Police identified the driver of the Mazda as 45-year-old Sheila Bethea, who was en route to her sister’s foster care appointment, at the time of the crash. She claimed to have a “bad leg and that the gas pedal got struck to the floor.”
Emergency medical services (EMS) transported two of the critically injured 5-year-old children to local hospitals. A 15-year-old girl traveling in the Mazda was declared dead shortly after arriving at Queens Center hospital. The head-on collision greatly damaged both the Toyota minivan and the Mazda. Rescue officials extricated the injured three injured victimized children from the Mazda.
Witnesses said that the children that were injured in the car were bleeding from their faces. Police reported that two other children that were traveling in the Mazda were 10 and 11-year-old girls who suffered from moderate injuries. Police identified the driver of the Toyota minivan as 63-year-old Carl Williams, who suffered minor injuries in the crash. New York police charged Bethea with reckless endangerment, and putting the children at serious risk by removing a seat to pack the children in the vehicle.
