Legal news for New Jersey Personal Injury lawyers–Firefighters rescued two boys in apartment fire who suffered from serious injuries due to smoke inhalation.
Atlantic City, NJ (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – An Atlantic City apartment fire caused by an electrical malfunction injured two young boys who were rescued by firefighters, Saturday, October 24, 2009, announced The Press of Atlantic City. The mother of two young boys heard a blast and then the lights went out in her first-floor Atlantic Gardens apartment around 12:45 p.m last Saturday morning. She walked out of the bathroom to find a cloud of thick smoke and flames quickly spreading around her kitchen.
Sepulveda raced to her son’s bedroom screamed and shook the boys to wake up, but they lay lifeless in their beds. Panicked, Sepulveda flew out of her burning apartment to find help. Station 1 Firefighters were already on their way to the scene where the boys still in their beds were quickly losing consciousness.
Firefighter Jeff Bird, along with Captain Shannon Stinsman and Firefighter Greg Rando, rescued both boys— Edwin and Adalid Barahona. An ambulance transported the two biys to a Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia to be treated by doctors and nurses. The two children suffered from excessive smoke inhalation. Adalid, 8, was in critical condition, while his brother 9-year-old Edwin was making progress.
Investigators determined that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction with the refrigerator. They were not sure what caused the malfunction. “It appeared to be an accident,” stated Battalion Chief Michael Mooney. Firefighter Bird’s wife set up a trust account to help the two injured children at Ocean City Home Bank for those of the community to donate to the Barahona family.
