Erie County, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A school bus transporting 22 students was struck by another vehicle that ran a red light, and injured three people around 3 p.m., on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, announced the Buffalo News.
The crash took place at Whitehaven and Baseline roads on Grand Island. The impact of the crash sent the school bus flying into a tree, reported Erie County sheriff’s.
Police reported the driver of the vehicle to be 81-year-old Fay Avarello. She was airlifted via Mercy Flight helicopter where doctors and nurses treated her face and chest injuries. The school bus driver, identified as 54-year-old Nancy Heftka, was transported via ambulance to Kenmore Mercy Hospital where she was treated for a leg injury.
The crash injured one student on board, who suffered a minor laceration was sent home to be treated at his family doctor’s office. The other 21 students involved in the crash were examined and released. Police continue to investigate the wreck.
