Belmont, MA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A high school girl was struck and killed by a passenger train behind Belmont High School around 12:40 p.m., Thursday, announced Boston Globe.
An unidentified 18-year-old female senior at Belmont High School took a well known student shortcut to school, and was walking on the train tracks when the passenger train struck her, as reported the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and local police. The passenger train had just left the Belmont Station and was traveling on the Fitchburg Line when it hit the young woman.
The young woman was hit by the train on the section of the tracks where trees heavily lined the area, which is about 250 feet away from the closest pedestrian crossing area. Officials have not determined what factors were involved in the fatal and tragic death. Police officials met with the family of the high school girl and the principle of the school, Michael Harvey, who said grief counselors will be available for the students.
There was reportedly a fence between the high school property and the railroad tracks. Officials have not released the name of the girl as of yet. Transit authorities and police along with emergency responders continue to investigate the scene.
