Occupational Safety and Health Administration alerts- A construction accident in Kansas City left one person dead after 50 foot fall.

Kansas City, KS—A cherry picker-type lift tipped over at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts construction site, which left one worker dead and injured another. The fatal construction accident occurred around 1:45 p.m. on 16th Street just east of Broadway on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, as reported by the Kansas City Star.

Two workers were reportedly 50 feet in the air working on a cherry picker-type lift connecting steel beams on the side of the soon-to-be performing arts building. For unknown reasons, the lift tipped over and catapulted the two workers onto 16th Street. Other nearby workers rushed over to help the injured workers after hearing a loud crash. The boom of the lift was found completely destroyed laid across a truck, which had steel beams piled in the back. The orange and yellow lift was overturned with two out of four wheels in the air. The two Detroit-based Midwest Steel Inc. employees were rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency medical services (EMS) crews.

One of the workers, a 35-year-old Lee’s Summit resident, was pronounced dead by doctors and nurses shortly after arriving at the hospital. The other worker, 30-year-old Grain Valley man, was seriously injured but is currently listed in stable condition. The victims identities were not revealed due to the family notification processes. The lettering located on the lift indicated a rental company owned the machinery. Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/, J.E. Dunn safety personal, and area police officials are investigating the accident.

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts building is a $400 million project that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.
