Legal news for Maryland Personal Injury attorneys – a social worker killed by school bus in front of Elementary school.
Bethesda, MD (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A school bus struck a social worker in front of Bethesda Elementary School Wednesday afternoon, November 11, 2009, announced MyFoxDC.
Montgomery police reported to the scene around 1:30 p.m., on Arlington Road where 60-year-old Sheila Clark Humphries was tragedy struck and fatally injured.
Sheila’s co-workers believe she was heading back to her office after a lunch-share program at a local church when she was hit by the school bus. Her co-workers also said that she was a beloved woman who dedicated her life to helping the homeless.
It was reported that Sheila would take the same route to work every day, but as she walked across Arlington Road a school bus struck her as it pulling out of the driveway at the elementary school. A prior investigation stated that Sheila was in fact in the crosswalk when the bus struck her. It was not determined if the walk sign was flashing when Sheila crossed.
Police reported that no one else suffered injuries in the crash. The bus driver was scheduled to take a routine alcohol and drug screening, which is a standard procedure after accidents.
The Montgomery County Public Schools expressed their deepest sympathies to Ms. Humphries family. The school system is cooperating with area police investigators who are probing the accident. The school system is performing its own review to determine if they can improve the safety procedures to create a safer environment. Counselors were available for students who were on the bus at the time of the fatality.
