Pittsburgh, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A “Light-Up-Night” fireworks display malfunctioned and shot fireworks at a crowd of 150-200 attendants, which left 9 people injured on Friday, November 27, 2009, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The display reportedly flipped over, and fired six mortars into the crowd gathered near the intersection of Bridge and Freeport streets around 8:45p.m. to watch the show. Etna Fire Department officials reported to the scene where nine people, including children, were victims of first and second degree burns as well as bruises and lacerations when the fireworks exploded in the panicked crowd.
The fireworks were a product of Zambelli Fireworks Internationale based out of New Castle. A supervisor of the company was cooperating with Etna police officials to determine what caused the display to tip over. Emergency transportation arrived at the scene. Paramedics treated the nine injured victims at the scene. Many people stood around in shock and horror of what had just taken place.
Police and Fire Department officials tried to keep the crowd from stampeding away from the scene while the injured were treated inside a local store by EMS. The misdirected fireworks also damaged the exterior of three local buildings. The victims remained unidentified.
