Bronx, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A fatal three vehicle crash catapulted one woman off the Bruckner Expressway onto the Amtrak train tracks 40-feet below on Friday, December 4, 2009, according to New York Daily News.
Officials reported that an SUV traveling in the northbound lanes on the Expressway tried to maneuver around some debris in the road, when she lost control and swerved into the middle lane. A postal truck then swerved out of the middle lane to avoid getting hit by the SUV, but then cut another driver off in the process.
The mail truck rammed into the median and the third vehicle, carrying Tom Brokaw and his wife Meredith, slid into the U.S. Postal truck. The driver of the SUV was then ejected out of her vehicle and plummeted 40 feet down to her death when she landed on the Amtrak train tracks.
Police identified the driver of the SUV to be 30-year-old Suejaes Estrada, who was declared dead at the scene of the tragic accident. Tom and Meredith Brokaw escaped injury. The fatal and horrific crash occurred at 1 p.m. Emergency medical teams arrived and treated the Brokaw’s at the scene for minor injuries.
The driver of the postal truck was treated for trauma and remained unidentified. The fatal wreck delayed traffic on the Expressway for hours, while six Amtrak trains were delayed for an hour. Police reported that Estrada’s speed appeared to be a factor in the accident. Police have not filed any charges as of yet.
