Gansevoort, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — There was a tragic loss for the town of Northumberland, when a beloved man of the community and retired volunteer fireman, was killed on a snowplow truck by a freight train on Wednesday, December, 9, 2009, according to the Saratogian.
Police reported to the horrific scene where 68-year-old James Shea was riding on the truck’s wing plow, when it became stuck on the tracks and was struck by a northbound Canadian Pacific fright train, instantly killing Shea. Police declared him dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, Kerry Garnsey, had to be extricated out of his wrecked vehicle.
Garnsey was rushed to Glen Falls Hospital by Moreau Emergency Squad to be treated for his severe head and chest injuries. Medical official reported that he was in critical condition. The snowplow truck was hit by the Canadian Pacific freight train at 8:45 a.m, where South Glens Falls Fire Department responded to the scene.
State environmental conservation officials and transportation personnel arrived at the scene of the fatal accident. The railroad crossing area had no lights and no gates to indicate a train was coming.
Shea was survived by his wife, Linda, and was a retired New York State Thruway Authority engineer. He was a part of the Northcumberland community for 10-12 years. The Canadian Pacific Railway spokesman stated that the 41-car-train was adequately staffed and had been coming from Pennsylvania. The freight train was headed to Rouses Point and then continued on to Montreal. Police continue to investigate to uncover he details of this tragic collision.
