Legal News for Product Liability Attorneys. Amby Baby Motion Beds voluntarily recalled due to suffocation hazard.

The Amby Baby Motion Bed has been recalled by the CPSC due to suffocation hazard.

Amby Baby Motion Beds, resembling small hammocks, were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov/ in coalition with Amby Baby, a Minneapolis based company, on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. They were recalled due to the suffocation hazard for infants. Online retailers sold approximately 24,000 of these baby hammocks for $250 a piece from January 2003 to October 2009.

According to the CPSC, in June 2009, a 4-month-old baby girl from Lawrenceville, Georgia suffocated while sleeping in an Amby Baby Motion Bed. In August 2009, a 5-month-old boy from Gresham, Oregon, tragically died due to suffocation from one of these hammocks. This particular baby bed consists of a steel frame with a small fabric hammock hanging from the top. It has recently been recognized by the CPSC as well as Amby Baby that hammock poses a safety threat when it shifts and tilts, the baby could quite easily become caught against the fabric or mattress pad of the bed, establishing a suffocation hazard for the infant. In 1995, suffocation was noted for being the leading cause of death in infants under the age of one, according to information provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). It was also reported that the suffocation rate among infants under the age of one were ten times more likely than among children 1-4 years old.

The CPSC urges all individuals who purchased the Amby Baby to discontinue using these motion beds immediately.
