Pennsylvania man jumps from car before train crash

Derry, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — A man leaped out of his vehicle just before an oncoming train collided with it, but the accident still claimed the man’s life Tuesday, December 15, 2009, according to WTAE.

Police reported that the man had been killed by the blunt force of the wreck. Police reported that it looked like the driver either jumped out of the vehicle or was ejected. Derry police said driver was traveling down Blair Way in Westmoreland County, when it appeared he could not stop his when he neared First Avenue around 6:45 p.m, then drove directly into an oncoming train.

Derry police identified the victim at the scene of the wreck as 61-year-old George Struble Jr., where they also discovered that the car had malfunctioned and had not been able to stop before the tracks. Police believe the driver tried to escape the vehicle before he was killed upon impact.

He was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the crash. It was reported that the operator had attempted to stop the train before the collision. Police found the victim’s body 40 yards away from the tracks. Struble’s family had been contacted with the tragic news.

A neighbor phoned the police to alert them about the accident, which is the third fatal wreck involving a train this year in Derry.
