CPSC alerts product liability attorneys- LG Electronics recalls 98,000 portable dehumidifiers.

West Palm Beach, FL—LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co., of China, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov/, and Health Canada announced a voluntary recall of 98,000 portable dehumidifiers. Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately unless they are advised otherwise, as reported by the CPSC.

The voluntary recall pertained to the 30 pint portable dehumidifiers sold under the following brand names and model numbers:

• Goldstar: GHD30Y7, DH305Y7
• Comfort-Aire: BHD-301-C

The recalled product was sold at Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Heat Controller Inc. retail outlets nationwide from January 2007 through June 2008. The product cost between $140 and $150. The dehumidifiers are white with a red shut-off button, contain controls for the fan speed and humidity control, and has a front-loading water bucket. The brand names, “Goldstar” or “Confort-Aire”, are printed on the front of the product. The model and the serial numbers can be found on the interior of the dehumidifiers, which can be found after the water bucket is removed. The product was recalled because the power connectors or the dehumidifier’s compressor can short circuit, which poses a fire and burn hazard. At this time LG has received 11 reports of property damage, which involved arcing, heat, and smoke. The reports also included four fires that had caused smoke/water damage. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers are advised to discontinue use immediately, and to contact LG to verify if your product is involved in the recall. Consumers can return their product to an authorized LG service center for a free repair. For more information, contact LG at toll-free (877) 220-0479 between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.
