Ashtabula, OH—One person was tragically killed after a chain-reaction traffic accident sent a pickup truck crashing through an audience that was watching a live nativity scene outside an Ohio church on Wednesday, December 24, 2009, reports the LA Times. Norman Jepson, former Ashtabula Fire Chief, was dressed as one of the Three Wise Men in the performance; He allegedly made the 911 emergency call after the horrifying incident.
According to the information provided by sources, a car reportedly struck a pickup truck, which sent the pickup truck crashing into as many as six members of the audience who were watching the live nativity scene performance outside of Trinity Presbyterian Church. A 57-year-old man was subsequently pinned against a utility pole after being hit by the pickup truck.
The man who was pinned against the utility pole was identified as Richard Seckman, reported the United Press International. Seckman allegedly died from the serious injuries he sustained in the incident. It was reported that several emergency medical services (EMS) ambulances responded to the scene to transport the injured to hospitals for treatment by doctors and nurses. Eli Roath, 53, a victim in the accident, allegedly had to be airlifted to a Cleveland hospital for the treatment of his unspecified injuries.
The 29-year-old female car driver was blamed for the accident after she attempted to make a turn, but collided with an oncoming pickup truck, setting off the chain-reaction accident that consequently killed one. The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department allegedly stated that the driver might be charged in the incident after a victim died.
