Louisiana State Police investigate fatal motorcycle wreck on Louisiana Highway 39.

New Orleans, LA—A motorcycle collision claimed one life and left another in critical condition in Plaquemines Parish on Saturday, January 2, 2010, according to Nola.com. The horrifying crash reportedly occurred just after 7 p.m.

Louisiana State Police (LSP) allegedly reported that Travis Hamburg, a 29-year-old New Orleans man, was traveling northbound on Louisiana 39 when he stopped his 2003 Suzuki motorcycle next to the shoulder of the highway. Upon attempting to pull back into the roadway and continue traveling, he was struck by an oncoming 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by 36-year-old Rondell Isidore of Pointe a La Hache.

State police allegedly stated that Isidore was pronounced dead at the scene of the tragic motorcycle wreck. Emergency medical services (EMS) teams responded to the scene to transport Hamburg to LSU Interim Public Hospital in New Orleans. Hamburg reportedly sustained severe injuries in the accident.

Statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) http://www.nhtsa.gov, found on Examiner.com, noted that motorcycle fatalities reported in the United States jumped 78 percent from 2000 to 2007. In 2000, there were 2,897 motorcycle crash fatalities where in comparison to 5,154 in 2007. Speed was a reported factor in the wreck by Louisiana State Police investigators. It is unknown whether alcohol played a role in the wreck. Police officials continue to investigate.
