San Diego, CA—A collision between a Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus and a small car sent three people to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious on Monday morning, January 4, 2010. Rescue teams rushed to the intersection of Douglas Avenue and Van Houten Avenue in El Cajon around 9:00 a.m., to treat the injured victims, as reported by the East County Magazine.

Heartland Fire & Rescue rushed to scene and found the driver of the car unconscious and not breathing. Rescue teams reportedly broke the rear window of the car, and used the jaws-of-life to extricate the seriously injured and non-responsive driver from the badly damaged vehicle. The unconscious driver was rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital’s trauma center for treatment of his critical injuries. Two passengers aboard the MTS transit bus sustained injuries, one reported in serious condition. They were also transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services (EMS) crews. It is unknown what prompted the violent crash. Police officials are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the wreck. Van Houten and Douglas Avenues were temporarily shut down for a few hours while investigations were underway; the roadway has since been reopened.
