Newark, NJ (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – Newark firefighters responded to the scene where a water pipe had broken in the basement of a vacant house, on Thursday, January 7, 2010, according to NJ.com.
The house was located at South 10th Street near the 11th Avenue intersection, where firefighters arrived at 12:30 a.m. The Fire Chief reported that the broken water pipe had sent water flooding through the walls of the vacant house, and into a resident’s house next door.
One Newark firefighter went down into the basement to attempt to fix the broken pipeline. The basement had flooded and the firefighter was working in 12 to 18 inches of water as he tried to shut off the pipe. While he was working, the firefighter fell into a ditch in the basement and sustained an injury.
Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the scene to transport the injured firefighter for treatment. Doctors and nurses treated the injured firefighter for lacerations on his hands and a twisted ankle at University Hospital. He was released after treatment. The water pipe was repaired.
