FDA: McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalls products due to discovered chemical

Legal news for Pennsylvania product liability attorneys—McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalled certain over-the-counter products January 15, 2010.

Fort Washington, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. in consultation with the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov has announced the voluntary recall of several OTC products due to consumer reports of a musty, moldy smell that has been connected to some minor bouts of gastrointestinal illness. Consumers reported having stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea due to use of McNeil’s over-the-counter products. The products have been recalled in Fiji, the Americas, and the United Arab Emirates.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare investigated the odor and reported that it was the product of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which is usually applied to packaging wood materials. This chemical was discovered in Tylenol Arthritis Pain 100 counts with ez-open caps, which was recalled in December 2009.

Therefore, the company decided to stop shipping their produced products in the wooden materials with this chemical. The company plans to continue to monitor the situation while in consultation with the FDA.

All who have purchased any of the products included in this recall are advised to discontinue use and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for how to receive a replacement or refund. For more information about the products recalled, or how to return or dispose of the product, contact the company at www.mcneilproductrecall.com or call 1-888-222-6036 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
