Fort Washington, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. in consultation with the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov has announced the voluntary recall of several OTC products due to consumer reports of a musty, moldy smell that has been connected to some minor bouts of gastrointestinal illness. Consumers reported having stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea due to use of McNeil’s over-the-counter products. The products have been recalled in Fiji, the Americas, and the United Arab Emirates.
McNeil Consumer Healthcare investigated the odor and reported that it was the product of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which is usually applied to packaging wood materials. This chemical was discovered in Tylenol Arthritis Pain 100 counts with ez-open caps, which was recalled in December 2009.
Therefore, the company decided to stop shipping their produced products in the wooden materials with this chemical. The company plans to continue to monitor the situation while in consultation with the FDA.
