FAA and NTSB investigate fatal single engine plane crash that left two dead.

Allegan County, MI—Two college students were tragically killed in a small plane crash on Sunday morning, January 17, 2010, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times. The plane reportedly crashed just after its departure from Tulip City Airport in Holland, Michigan.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office allegedly reported that air traffic control received a distress call from the single-engine plane prior to 11:30 a.m., and just before the aircraft vanished from the airport radar. For unknown reasons, the plane crashed into a soybean field. Emergency teams found the horribly damaged aircraft soon after being dispatched to the area, though fog reportedly reduced visibility to an eight of a mile.

Aboard the aircraft were 23-year-old David O. Otai, a licensed pilot and Hope College student as well as 20-year-old Emma E. Biagioni, also a student. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to the scene of the airplane crash to provide assistance for the injured. Unfortunately, both of the aircraft’s occupants were fatally injured in the wreck.

It was reported that on Sunday night, approximately 1,100 people were in attendance at the memorial service held on the Hope College campus. Investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are underway.
