Pedestrian fatally struck by car in Ohio traffic crash.

Heath, OH—A female pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident involving a car on Sunday, January 10, 2010, according to reports by the Newark Advocate. The fatal pedestrian-involved traffic crash occurred on Ohio State Route 79.

Police officials allegedly reported that 53-year-old Holly Hammond, of Newark, was crossing Ohio 79, where the roadway intersects with Parkview and Hopewell drives around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Simultaneously, a southbound Toyota Camry, driven by a 51-year-old Pataskala man, Frank Boyer, was traveling on Ohio 79 when he noticed the woman crossing the roadway. The driver allegedly honked his horn and attempted to stop his vehicle before striking her but was reported unsuccessful.

Emergency medical services (EMS) teams responded to the crash scene to transport the seriously injured pedestrian to Licking Memorial Hospital. She was then reportedly airlifted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio to be treated by doctors and nurses. Unfortunately, Hammond’s injuries proved fatal at 11:56 p.m. Sunday night at the hospital.

Police reports allegedly stated that the Toyota driver was traveling at a speed of 35 mph, which was the posted speed limit in that area. Eyewitnesses at the scene of the traffic accident also reported that Boyer had the right-of-way, a green light, at the time of the incident. He was not cited in the crash. No toxicology tests are pending though police allegedly believe Hammond may have been intoxicated when the oncoming vehicle struck her.
