Ambulances were waiting at Charlotte-Douglas Airport after 12 complained of headaches and nausea on U.S. Airways flight.
Charlotte, NC—A dozen people aboard U.S. Airways Flight 1041 reported headaches and nausea, possibly stemming from a strange odor on the plane, according to information provided by the Charlotte Observer. The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night, January 16, 2010 on a flight departing from the U.S. Virgin Islands, en route to Charlotte, North Carolina.
The stench was allegedly noticed by crew members aboard the plane soon after it took off from the Virgin Islands at 5:45 p.m. MEDIC, North Carolina’s emergency medical services (EMS) agency was called as a safety precaution prior to the planes landing at Charlotte-Douglas Airport. Upon landing in North Carolina at 8:32 p.m., almost a dozen ambulances were reportedly waiting at the airport.
Of the 174 passengers aboard the jet, responding medical professionals treated five at the scene. Seven crew members were allegedly transported to Presbyterian Hospital to be treated for their reported headaches and nausea by doctors and nurses. The U.S. Airways aircraft was taken out of service pending further investigations into the odor that left the plane’s occupants feeling ill. Officials from the Charlotte Fire Department allegedly stated that the odor did not come from carbon monoxide. Charlotte Fire Department’s Haz-Mat (hazardous materials) team investigates.
