Two MDOT workers suffered fatal injuries in traffic accident.
Lumberton, MS—Two Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) workers were reportedly spreading sand over an icy stretch of a problem-prone U.S. 11, when they were killed after being hit by a passing car, reports the Clarion Ledger. The unfortunate traffic accident occurred on Monday, January 11, 2010.
The two employees, 43-year-old Leon Sims and 25-year-old Tyler Kilsby, were allegedly working under a railroad trestle when a Mercury Marquis slammed into them, and then proceeded to strike an MDOT truck. Both of the MDOT employees sustained fatal injuries in the traffic accident. The Mercury driver, 82-year-old Dorothy Crawley as well as the 57-year-old truck driver, Percy Leggett, were both transported by responding emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to Forrest General Hospital. Crawley reportedly suffered serious injuries in the crash, but was listed in stable condition at the hospital. Leggett was reportedly treated by doctors and nurses and then released from the medical center.
The Lumberton Police Department did not say what caused the crash, though icy roadways may have been a factor in the fatal crash. The former mayor of Lumberton reportedly claimed that there had been problems with that section of the roadway for years since a natural spring runs below the road causing issues including standing water, potholes, and erosion. Investigations continue.
