Ocala, FL—A large metal beam fell onto a construction worker while on the job, tragically crushing him on Friday morning, January 15, 2010. The man, employed by Metal-Bilt Construction LLC, an Orlando-based company, was part of a crew subcontracted to finish an expansion at National Parts Depot, where the fatal construction accident occurred. National Parts Depot is located at 900 S.W. 38th Avenue, according to information provided by Ocala.com.

The Ocala Police Department allegedly received three witness accounts, all commonly maintaining that the man, 33-year-old Victor Lizarraga, attempted to escape upon noticing the falling beam. Unfortunately, he could not get away in time and was subsequently crushed by the 33-foot-long, 1,750-pound beam.

The victim’s cousin, a witness of the horrifying incident, allegedly told officials that Lizarraga had been standing in front of a forklift when he heard the beam falling and tried to run. He also reportedly stated that no employees or other individuals were near the beam at the time of the fatal work place accident.

Workers on the scene were reported able to remove the metal beam from on top of the severely injured man although his injuries proved fatal at 8:50 a.m., a mere three minutes after Ocala Fire Rescue teams were notified of the incident. Lizarraga is survived by a wife and two young children. Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov continue to investigate the fatal construction accident.
