San Bernardino, CA—Three people were hospitalized after a suspected drunk driver slammed into the back of a California Highway Patrol (CHP) cruiser that was stopped while helping another motorist. The crash occurred on Thursday, January 21, 2010 around 9:50 a.m., along Interstate 10, as reported by The Desert Sun.
According to the CHP, two officers were at the scene of a single-vehicle non-injury crash, which involved a mustang, during a downpour. The Mustang, driven by Gabriella Roque, 30 of Cathedral City, reportedly lost control and spun out on the eastbound side of I-10 near Indio, when it finally came to a stop in the center divider, out of traffic. The two CHP officers, James Morgan and Miguel Diaz, were inside their cruiser while waiting for a tow truck to arrive at the scene when a 2002 silver Lexus driven by, Gordon Wilson, 45, of La Quinta, spun out and rear-ended the patrol car, which then hit the Mustang. The two police officers suffered “minor” injuries, and were treated at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Indio, and were released. Wilson was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of major injuries. Roque was uninjured in the wreck. CHP arrested Wilson on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. An investigation is ongoing.
