Huntersville, NC—A head-on collision on North Carolina Highway 73 left a fourth-grade teacher and another driver seriously injured on Thursday morning, January 21, 2010, according to the Charlotte Observer. The incident allegedly occurred as the young teacher was on her way to work.

Two vehicles were reportedly involved in the violent crash that allegedly took place less than a mile away from SouthLake Christian Academy, the school where the teacher is employed. Deputies from the Huntersville Police Department reportedly stated that both motorists involved in the wreck were “traveling about 55 mph, so it was a pretty devastating accident”. A Dodge Ram, being driven by Stephen Richard, allegedly veered across the median into oncoming traffic. Consequently, the pickup collided with an approaching Pontiac, driven by elementary school teacher, Aimee Powell.

Both drivers reportedly suffered serious injuries in the motor vehicle collision (MVC) and had to be transported to area hospitals by responding emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. Powell was allegedly transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where as Richard was taken to Presbyterian Hospital. Officials have not disclosed Powell’s condition as of yet.

Students and faculty are keeping the injured teacher in their prayers. Charges are pending the outcome of the accident investigation.
