Cleveland, OH—A violent explosion in a vacant residency resulted in 55 damaged homes in the surrounding area, and sent four people to the hospital on Monday afternoon, January 25, 2010. The blast was reported at approximately 3 p.m. that day, according to information provided by Fox8.com.
The fierce explosion allegedly occurred in the 2000 block of West 83rd Street in Cleveland, Ohio. A nearby resident reportedly compared the explosion to what she believed at the time to be an earthquake. That particular resident, identified as Mary Ann Mackojc, also claimed that her ceiling collapsed as a result of the explosion. Homes located up to six blocks away from the source of the explosion were allegedly affected by the force of the blast, some even reportedly caught fire as a result. Fifteen residencies were reported, “so badly damaged that families were unable to go home Monday night”. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews allegedly transported four people to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries.
The stench of gas was reported coming from the vacant house and was subsequently reported to local officials by neighboring residents on Thursday, January 21, 2010. Officials responded to the residence but failed to find the source of the odor. A spokesperson for the Cleveland Fire Department allegedly reported that the gas earlier reported by neighbors might have caused the brutal explosion. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter for those left temporarily homeless after the blast. Investigations are reported underway.
