Phoenix, AZ—A fight at Lewis prison injured 11 inmates on Saturday, January 30, 2010. The fight broke out around noon, after lunch between two inmates, which quickly grew out-of-control, as reported by the Washington Post.

Arizona Department of Corrections reported that one inmate was airlifted by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to an Valley area hospital, four were taken by ambulance, and another six inmates were taken off site by corrections department staff. The conditions of the inmates was not available, but their injuries were reported to be “non-life threatening.” It is unknown how many people were actually involved in the brawl, where weapons were reportedly involved. It is unknown what types of weapons the inmates used. An Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman reported “The disturbance between inmates was contained within five minutes…It was a fairly minor event.” It was not reported if any correction officers were injured in the altercation.

The Lewis prison is located near Buckeye, about 35 miles west of Phoenix. The prison was also the location of a mass fight among over 100 inmates, which left seven inmates and a corrections officer injured 7 in November 2009. The brawl occurred in a unit that houses about 800 inmates who are considered a high risk to public safety. The unit has since been put on lockdown.
