Bucks County, PA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – The family of a student, who was critically injured after being struck by a Bucks County middle school principle last month, has filed a lawsuit against the principle for speeding in a school zone, announced the Philadelphia Inquirer, February 5, 2010.
The federal lawsuit allegedly accuses the principle, 66-year-old Margaret Kantes, for running a red light and speeding when her SUV struck and seriously injured the family’s teenage son, who was reportedly walking in the crosswalk in a school zone on January 4th.
Law officials have not confirmed the family’s allegations, which are under review at the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, as of yet. The 16-year-old Pennridge High School boy, Ricardo Smith, was taken to the hospital where he was treated for brain and spinal injuries, a broken pelvis, and other injuries, which might cause permanent damage, stated the lawsuit. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. The teen’s medical bills are reported, “in the hundreds of thousands of dollars”, according to his attorney.
It was reported that principle was personally taken back by the tragic incident. Witnesses claimed that she was traveling above the school zone speed limit, which is 15 miles per hour starting at 6:45 a.m. Smith was struck at 6:48 a.m. according to police reports. Another witness also said that the SUV ran a red light before striking the boy in the crosswalk. After the accident, the school reset the flashing lights to alert drivers of a school zone to 6:25 a.m.
